“In the Woods” Edition
#Lablyfe is ELSO’s very first subscription box filled with STEAM learning activities for the culture! It teaches Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, the environment and Design the ELSO way.
So what happens?
Purchase this #LABLYFE box and learn about topics from everyday life (like basketball or harvest) and pack the box with games, experiments, projects, and cultural knowledge then tie in the story of a relevant historical Black, Brown or female professionals.
Surprisingly fun! Our box is dope because it does not limit learning to just Chemistry or just Physics! Minds are stretched with exposure to all sorts of sides of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, the environment and Design.
It doesn’t feel like homework! For each topic we mixed what kids want to know with what kids need to know. The word choices are straightforward and the booklets are designed by Black and Brown artists.
Always relevant! You do not have to wait until a heritage month to unpack all of the contributions all types of people have made to STEAM while learning about that topic.
Get it? That is STEAM the ELSO way!
WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED A BOX?
For the last 30 years only one in every eight Engineers is a woman. STEAM education has to do better!
The US as a whole is underperforming in STEAM proficiencies when compared with other nations. We are going to change that story!
Black and LatinX STEM workers cited the # 1 reason they are underrepresented in STEM as "Less likely to have access to quality education to prepare them for these fields" and the third most cited reason as "Not encouraged to pursue these subjects from an early age". We can do something about this!
US adults say K-12 public schools should emphasize “Any STEM subject” more than they do now." We can address this at home!
In 2015 the national average wage for all STEM occupations was nearly double the national average wage for non-STEM occupations. Our youth need to qualify for and enjoy these opportunities!
ELSO is poised to compete to adapt science education with a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity lens to mend the knowledge gap and propel the competitiveness of all students with a new approach.

Who designed this box?
The LabLyfe experience was designed around research conducted with Black and Brown children, families and educators by a Black scientist!
The research was designed and conducted by one of ELSO’s Co-Founders, Dr. Kellianne Richardson, a PhD trained Behavioral Pharmacologist. Each month’s topics were ranked and decided by 3rd to 8th graders then families and educators critiqued samples of the activities! In an interview if a kid says they “love games” we designed the next box with more games. If a parent said, “one of my children is special needs and I don’t like them to feel left out” then helper sheets are added in the box so that everyone present has a task to set up an activity. If a single parent said, “I don’t have time to help but I care” activities were designed to be led by a 14-year-old. Finally, all activities were aligned to Next Generation Science Standards but present like a regular magazine. These standards are followed by 20 states and the District of Columbia. An additional 24 states have adopted their own standards based on the same framework.
